Safe Places (SPL) is an augmentation tool for Digital Contact Tracing (DCT). SPL is meant to work in concert with the Safe Paths Mobile App. The practice of DCT involves more tools and processes than just what SPL provides capabilities for.

Typical Digital Contact Tracing (DCT) Interview

Contextual Assumptions about DCT

  • A medical records system (MRS) exists, outside of what Safe Places (SPL) actually provides.

  • The medical records system could be anything from a comprehensive CRM to pen and papers / file storage system.

  • The contact information used to contact a COVID+ patient comes from an existing MRS.

  • The contact information of close contacts gleaned from the CT interview are also stored in the MRS.

  • Contact tracers seek to establish a relationship with an infected patient as part of the interview process

  • Patients may be symptomatic and not have all necessary cognitive faculties.

  • Tolerance for technology related stress is extremely low to zero

  • Contact tracing interviews may take multiple sessions and span 10+ hours of actual interview time

  • Contact tracing interviews may occur in person or via phone.

    • We believe 90% of these interviews happen via phone.

  • Contact tracers will often pass their findings (usually contact information of a patients close-contacts), to a separate investigation team.

How does Safe Places fit into a DCT Interview

Safe Places (SPL) working from location history data shared from the patients mobile device provides an intuitive map based interface for the CT to work through the timeline of a patients travel history and whom they may have encountered or had close contact with.

CT’s are expected to redact / remove sensitive location history (such as personal residence) from the patients SPL file and gain consent prior to storing the location history in a database where the data can be aggregated and published as “points of concern” for the community to receive exposure notifications based on.
